ARhrrrr!
ARhrrrr is an augmented reality shooter for mobile camera-phones. The phone provides a window into a 3d town overrun with zombies. Point the camera at our special game map to mix virtual and real world content. Civilians are trapped in the town, and must escape before the zombies eat them! From your vantage point in a helicopter overhead, you must shoot the zombies to clear the path for the civilians to get out. Watch out though as the zombies will fight back, throwing bloody organs to bring down your copter. Move the phone quickly to dodge them. You can also use Skittles as tangible inputs to the game, placing one on the board and shooting it to trigger an explosion.
By merging graphics with props in the physical world, handheld Augmented Reality games pull the player through the small screen and into a larger merged play-space. Our primary motivation for this AR game was to explore fast-action first-person augmented reality, where the camera controls and movement that would typically require a mouse and keyboard are handled directly by simply moving the device. Advanced tracking technology allows the player to quickly zoom in and out and view the world at steep angles, making this a highly interactive and engaging game. Finally, we wanted to test tangible input mechanics, such as placing and shooting Skittles to trigger in-game events.

Brilliant idea! I’ve blogged about it at http://www.notjustreality.com/lead-story/51-augmented-zombies-arhrrrr/
Is this just a proof of concept for Indiecade or are you planning to get it into production?
Right now it’s just a concept demonstration, but I’d love to take this (and similar games) into production; unfortunately, there’s no commercial device that can run such stuff yet. So, nothing will happen in that regard till there’s Tegra-based devices (or something similarly powerful) available to run it. And, of course, it would have to be financially viable.

Blair, are you sure you couldn’t get this to work in some sense on a smart phone? Android has OpenGL built in, and the T-Mobile/HTC/Google G1 seems to have all the necessary sensors. Android doesn’t allow you to do native code yet, does it? So, we can’t do computer vision on the image. Plus, it’s camera (like the old iPhone) is poor quality. I think the next gen of Android phones may support JNI and a JIT, plus run on better hardware. That’ll be cool. Of course, we’d still need a real game engine to entice me to switch; Unity is ten kinds of awesome wrapped into a nice editor.
BTW, wikitude and Layar are pretty limited and not much more than tech demos; I don’t think either will actually get used much (although they’ll probably get downloaded a lot and get a lot of press).
I think some credit is due to an earlier game that had much to do with the inspiration for this game.
Joe Warpin http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mS_igJZWtIU came first last fall and I worked on it.
Fair point, Andrew. It definitely was an inspiration, and did serve as one of the starting points for the game.
Hi Blair,
Can you port it to the new Iphone GS (should be quite close to the tegra ) ? you could sell this app very easly and that would finance a more sophisticated game that could run on a more powerful Iphone (Apple release one model per year).
I would love to buy it, print a map on my printer, create map/games and share them/ fight online.
would be fun.
I imagine very well a map of my current office and my curent boss as target
.
Cheers

How about getting this game onto Windows Mobile? The HTC Touch HD2 has a snapdragon processor rated at 1 GHz, a 5mp camera, and 480×800 wvga resolution. Superior specs to the iPhone 3gs, and more importantly no Apple approval process for Windows Mobile apps.
It is running on Windows Mobile, actually; the Tegra dev kit runs version 6.5. Unfortunately, (a) I don’t have any high end production WinMo phones like the HD2, (b) we don’t have a license for the natural feature map tracker to use on any other platform, and (c) we have no funding to do such a port.
BTW, the appeal of the iPhone is the store; porting to any other platforms makes no monetary sense till there’s a proven market. In this case, if some big company wanted to fund a student to do the port to another platform, I could probably find a student to do it.
